Most failed bird proofing jobs come down to the same six mistakes. Knowing them before you book a job — or attempt one yourself — can save you significant money and frustration.
These are the issues we're called in to fix most often — sometimes on jobs done by other companies, sometimes on DIY attempts.
Hardware store bird mesh and galvanised wire are the most common materials used by under-qualified installers. In Brisbane's subtropical climate — high UV, humidity, and occasional salt air — galvanised mesh begins to oxidise within 2–3 years. It leaves rust stains on your roof and loses structural integrity, creating gaps. 304 stainless steel is the correct specification. Anything less is a temporary fix.
Some installers anchor mesh by drilling through roof tiles or screwing into metal flashings. Both approaches create water ingress points and void your roofing warranty. Tile drilling risks cracking — especially on terracotta. A non-penetrative clip system that attaches to the panel frame only is the correct method. If an installer proposes drilling into your roof, ask why.
Installing mesh over an active or recently cleared nest site without removing all debris is one of the most common errors. Leftover nesting material retains moisture, attracts insects, and — critically — signals to pigeons that this is still a viable site. They will attempt to re-enter around any mesh edge. Full clearance before installation is not optional; it is the foundation of a lasting result.
A single gap of 40mm is all a pigeon needs to squeeze through. Standard roll mesh installations frequently leave unguarded gaps at corners, junctions between panels, and the points where DC cables enter conduit. Each of these needs to be individually measured and fitted. Custom cutting on-site — not pre-cut rolls — is the only way to guarantee a sealed perimeter.
Gel repellents, bird spikes, and sound deterrents have a place in some pest management scenarios. Solar panels are not one of them. Pigeons are highly adaptable and will habituate to deterrents within weeks. Spikes placed on panel edges don't protect the gap beneath. Gel degrades in Brisbane's heat and becomes a trap for small birds. These products treat symptoms rather than the access point.
Falls from roofs are a leading cause of serious injury in Australian home maintenance. A two-storey or steeply pitched roof is not a safe DIY environment without harness, anchor points, and roof ladders. If your roof requires safety equipment to access, the cost difference between a DIY kit and a professional install is not worth the risk. Our technicians work with full fall protection on every job.
Any installer should immediately tell you they use 304 stainless steel. If they say "stainless" without specifying grade, or mention galvanised wire, walk away. The grade determines the lifespan of the installation.
The correct answer is non-penetrative clips attached to the panel frame only — no drilling into the roof. If drilling is proposed, ask specifically which roofing warranty provisions allow for this, and whether their insurance covers resulting water damage.
A quality installation carries at least a 10-year product warranty on the mesh and a minimum 12-month labour warranty. Any installer not offering written warranty terms is telling you something about their confidence in the work.
Check the mesh colour and texture — galvanised wire has a dull grey-silver look and will show rust spots within a few years. Look along the perimeter for gaps, especially at corners and where cables enter conduit. If birds are still active, that tells you something. We offer inspections if you're unsure about an existing install.
Yes — and this is a job we do regularly. We remove the old mesh and any anchoring hardware, clear out any accumulated debris, and install correctly using the right materials and method. If screws were drilled into your roof, we'll assess and report on what remediation may be needed.
Any time. Brisbane pigeons nest year-round, so there is no off-season for this problem. If you are aware of nesting activity, acting sooner limits the amount of accumulated damage. Spring sees an uptick in demand as new breeding cycles begin, so lead times may be slightly longer from August onwards.
304 stainless steel, non-penetrative clips, nest removal included. 10-year warranty.
